I was very excited last November when my son expressed an interest in photography. More exactly, he expressed an interest in a hobby that had NOTHING to do with video games (if you have a 16 yr old male inhabiting your basement, you can surely understand) !
So today, we decided to go do our first shoot together. I didn't want to make it laborious, so I kept it basic. I explained the relationships between ISO, Shutter Speed & aperture. Then I explained how to manipulate two to get what you want for the third. We shot about thirty pictures together, then looked to see what we got. Here are some examples:
Here, we liked the way the snow had different shades of white & grey, depending on the shadows.
In this image, we liked the gradients between the land & sky. I could've improved this image, had it set the aperture to hits highest setting, rather than somewhere around f8
The object of this photo was to look at ordinary things in extraordinary ways. The sky is a brilliant blue, creating a wonderful backdrop.
Here, we were shooting into the sun. It creates flare, which over-exposes the photo. Here, I tried to take advantage of it, but the negative is that is tends to wash out the colors.
So we had a good first day. My son understands the basics of photography, as well as the controls of his camera. Now, I have a built-in shooting buddy for my projects !
