Cloud - What do YOU think of ?

The term "Cloud" has been used a lot to describe this marvelous new tool called the Internet. OK, all facetiousness aside, what do people think of ? Well, I think that first their perceptions are based on what they see in advertising. Apple presents "iCloud", which seems to me to be more of a transport medium. I use iCloud to sync documents & photos between my laptop, my phone and my tablet.

Google would have you believe that they invented the cloud. To be fair, they pioneered the concept of editing documents online. Googls Docs was & is a pretty cool suite of tools. And it couples tightly with other Google offerings, such as GMail, giving you a comprehensive online software suite. All for the low, low price of: FREE !

There are people who use DropBox, which is like a hard-drive on the Internet. You have a folder on your laptop which looks & feels like any other folder. Except that anything you place in that folder is auto-magically synced to your online account. Sure, you online account is limited to 5 GB of data, but that's actually a fair bit, depending what you use it for. And, like iCloud, there is an iOS app that allows you to access your online storage on your mobile device.

Your perception of the cloud is all in how you use it. The way most home users take advantage of it is via online storage media. Whether it is to house email, like GMail and HotMail, or to edit documents, using Microsoft Office365 or Google Documents. In a nuteshell, these services represent a couple of different types of cloud offering. There are a few more, but we'll talk about those in another post.
